Signs of problem gambling
Gambling should be entertainment. If gambling — or acting on betting tips — is causing stress, financial difficulty, or harm to your relationships, it may be time to seek support. Common warning signs include:
- Spending more money or time on gambling than you intended.
- Chasing losses — placing more bets to try to win back money you have lost.
- Borrowing money, or selling things, to fund gambling.
- Lying to family, friends, or employers about your gambling.
- Feeling anxious, irritable, or low when you are not gambling.
- Neglecting work, study, family, or social commitments because of gambling.
- Gambling to escape problems, stress, or difficult feelings.
- Trying — without success — to cut down or stop.
If any of these apply to you, free and confidential help is available below.

Staying in control
Taking control of your gambling is a sign of strength. Before you bet, consider:
- Set a budget — decide the most you can afford to lose, and stick to it.
- Set time limits — decide in advance how long each session will last.
- Take regular breaks — never bet when tired, stressed, or under the influence of alcohol.
- Never chase losses — accepting a loss is part of responsible gambling.
- Keep a record — track what you bet and what you spend.
Most licensed bookmakers offer deposit limits, session time limits, and cooling-off periods in their account settings. Use them.
